Huntsville, AL
Park # 35
What I Remember
I remember a long game. See below where it says that every member of the Knoxville Blue Jays had a hit? Well, that tends to take awhile and although we saw a lot of long games in the summer of ’91 and generally didn’t mind, I recall being tired and ready for this game to end long before it did.
Joe Davis Stadium was a representative of its era, which is to say something of a dinosaur by today’s ballpark standards. It had a huge concrete grandstand and bench seats running down both baselines but I don’t believe the park approached its 10,000-plus capacity more than a handful of times per season.
The Rocket City, so named because Huntsville is home to the U.S, Space and Rocket Center, was without professional baseball for several years. The Huntsville Stars moved south to Biloxi, MS in 2015 but this spring the former Mobile Bay Bears have brought professional baseball back to the area in the form of one of the strangest names in sports. The Rocket City Trash Pandas play at brand new Toyota Stadium in nearby Madison, AL.
