Day 39: May 17, 1991

Jacksonville, FL

Park # 38

What I Remember

It was a packed house and a good game on a Friday night in Jacksonville but despite the fact that the Suns had a handful of future major leaguers, including Bret Boone, the players were not the main attraction.

The Famous Chicken was in the house and it was the first time we saw his act that season. The Chicken stopped performing a few years back but he was at the top of his game in 1991 and the sellout crowd loved it.

The Game(s)

Birmingham Barons 8 Jacksonville Suns 6 (11 Inns)

Bret Boone hit a home run in the sixth inning that gave the hometown Suns a 6-4 lead but it was all Barons from there on in and Birmingham scored two in the top of the 11th to win.

The Trip

I can almost still hear our collective sigh of relief upon reaching Jacksonville. The stretch between Palm Springs, CA and Jacksonville three weeks later was perhaps the toughest travel schedule of our entire season but this would be the first of 12-straight days in the state of Florida.
