Day 53: May 31, 1991

Fayetteville, NC

Park # 56

What I Remember

I remember a raucous crowd. May 31 was a Friday in 1991 and the Friday night crowd at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, just a few miles from Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base was ready to have some fun.

The park itself was nothing particularly special and, although it is still standing, the area’s minor league team these days, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, play at a new stadium in downtown Fayetteville.

My biggest memory of baseball in Fayetteville didn’t come until last summer when I wrote a post about this stop on my Low Mileage Tour site. In researching the events of this night I found a story that moves me to this day. You can read it here and watch the corresponding video. May 31 1991 was not Memorial Day but today is and the story seems fitting as we remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
