Day 62: June 9, 1991

Peninsula, (Hampton) VA

Park # 68

What I Remember

Peninsula, along with its neighbor Tidewater and Quad Cities in Iowa were among the more mysterious sounding spots when I researched this trip. Neither the first or second part of the team’s name gave much indication where it was. Peninsula, I figured was on a peninsula somewhere but I had no idea where.

By the time we got ready to drive to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia on this June Sunday, however, we knew where to find the team and we found War Memorial Stadium a very pleasant old park about halfway between Hampton and Newport News. It says in the article below that we thought the park was average but I recall it being nicer than that. Fwiw.

Unfortunately the team lasted just one more season after we were there and affiliated minor league baseball has not returned since. There is a current iteration of the Peninsula Pilots play in the collegiate Coastal Plain League and they still use War Memorial Stadium.

A reporter from the local paper came out and did a very nice feature story about us, which makes me wonder why I appear to be sneering at him in the picture that ran with the story.
