What I Remember

Just about every minor league team today has unusual nickname, there are Yard Goats, Jumbo Shrimp and Trash Pandas all vying for a larger slice of the increasing memorabilia pie. But in 1991 most minor league teams used their parent club’s name, the Carolina Mudcats being a notable and successful exception.

From the start, everyone wanted a Mudcats hat and the team gifted us with one for each of us the night we were there. Unfortunately the team’s new park, Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC was still a few weeks from ready to open. That gave us, however, a chance to see a game at lovely old Fleming Stadium in Wilson, the next town over. You will get a full rundown on some of that park’s history in the video below.
