Day 71: June 18, 1991

Greensboro, NC

Park # 77

What I Remember

I remember the Dizzy Bat Race, of course. It was one of the most notable (in my mind notorious might be a better word) clips on our Major League Baseball Magazine segment and one that always seemed to show up in highlight compilations of our trip.

For the uninitiated, a Dizzy Bat Race requires that you place your forehead on a bat and then, holding it there, spin around the bat 10 times before attempting to run. We took part in the festivities between games of a doubleheader at Greensboro’s old War Memorial Stadium. A good example of how it is not meant to be done can be found within the video below.

We didn’t know it at the time but we also saw a future Hall of Famer on the bench 30 years ago tonight. You will find a pitcher with a pedestrian 2-4 record on the Greensboro Hornets roster, that pitcher was Mariano Rivera.
