What I Remember
I remember Dyar Miller. John Dittrich, the GM of the Columbus Indians was particularly nice to Sue and me. Not only did he give us two of what seemed like everything they sold at the souvenir stand, he got us a room for the night at a local hotel and as we were having a late snack and a beer after the game we met Miller who was the Indians pitching coach. Dyar Miller had been a key left-handed reliever in the mid 70s for my favorite team, the Baltimore Orioles -it was a thrill to meet him and he showed genuine interest in what we were doing.
I recall Golden Park as a lovely old stadium, it sits right next to the Chattahoochee River that separates Georgia from Alabama and has a high grandstand similar to some of the other old parks of the South Atlantic League. It was, like today, the summer solstice and we were on the far western edge of the eastern time zone so I think the game was over before it was fully dark that night.
