Day 76: June 23, 1991

Martinsville, VA

Park # 82

What I Remember

English Field felt like the quintessential neighborhood ballpark. It was, then anyway, no more fancy than most American Legion team stadiums and not as fancy as many a college field. People walked to the games and when they got there they often sat in their own lawn chairs.

However, on the field that night were more than one future major leaguer. Gary Bennett, the Phillies catcher, went on to play parts of 15 seasons in the majors and Manny Ramirez, playing for the Burlington Indians went on to become a major league star, beginning in Cleveland two seasons later.
