What I Remember
I remember making some new friends. I remember Muddy the Mud Hen. I remember talking about Max Klinger. With the exception of the Durham Bulls, the Toledo Mud Hens were the most recognizable team name in minor league baseball on our 1991 trip. The team was popularized as the favorite team of Max Klinger in the tv show M*A*S*H and a whole generation of people had heard of the Mud Hens but probably had no idea what league they played in or perhaps even if they were a real team.
Ned Skeldon Stadium itself was classic old school minor leagues in 1991. It opened in 1965 and was/is located in the suburb of Maumee, OH. The team moved into a brand new stadium just before my 2003 trip and I recall it as an improvement in almost every way. However, Ned Skeldon Stadium did have a fun concourse with carnival-type lighting and Muddy, the team’s mascot was one of the best we saw.
If you want to see Ned Skeldon Stadium in its present form I would recommend going soon. The stands are unusable and may soon be demolished.
