Day 99: July 16, 1991

St. Catharines, ON

Niagara Falls, NY

Parks # 109 & 110

What I Remember

It very seldom happened on our Excellent Adventure, not even a handful of times. But on a beautiful July day at the Canadian border 30 years ago today, tourism overshadowed baseball. We spent the morning and a good part of the afternoon at Niagara Falls before heading for the first of two games that night. We got several minutes of video footage of the falls and the Maid of the Mist and the video has held up well over the years.

Community Field in St. Catharine’s was like a northern version of an Appalachian League park. A nice, but mostly unadorned field, perfect for Class-A baseball for many years before 1991 but not many after. Two of the most interesting aspects of Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls were apparently removed in the late 90s. There was a swimming pool right outside the front gate when we there and there was a classic old facade facing in that direction. When the park was renovated the facade was taken down and the field re-oriented.
